WHY CHOOSE A CAREER IN THE ELECTRICAL FIELD?

High School Counselors and Parents

Higher education is becoming more expensive every year, and the rising costs of tuition, room and board, and text books has become a major burden for parents and students alike.

A career in the electrical field is a viable alternative to financing a college education without going into debt. The Independent Electrical Contractors' (IEC) electrical apprenticeship program provides its students with the opportunity to earn money while learning a highly marketable skill in a career field that is in demand. Our students can also earn college credits and these credits are transferable to most two and four year institutions of higher learning. Finally, the training and skills that are acquired through IEC's apprenticeship program are portable and can be used across the country and around the world to gain meaningful employment that leads to career advancement, and even opportunities for motivated individuals to start their own businesses.

A career in the electrical field provides young men and women with the education, skill set, work ethic, and self-confidence to build their own futures and set a firm course for the rest of their lives.

Military/Veterans/Spouses

The electrical apprenticeship program from IEC is approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for veterans to use the Montgomery G.I. Bill. The monthly benefits are paid directly to the veteran. Check with the local IEC chapter for more information on how you can use these benefits.

Were you discharged from the military with a disability? Check with your local VA representative and IEC chapter about the apprenticeship program and what the VA will do for you during your training.

Spouses of active duty military personnel should consider a career in the electrical construction industry. Relocating is a way of life for military families and locating employment for the spouse can be difficult. As a journeyman electrician, you have a flexible profession and will earn a respectable income because electricians are in demand in almost all areas of the country.
